Emotional intelligence and resilience

Looking after yourself is an important skill as a champion for vulnerable children.

Emotional intelligence in safeguarding is defined as the ability to perceive, understand, and manage emotions, as well as to use these skills to guide decision-making and behaviour in a way that promotes personal growth and well-being. It involves recognizing and responding to one’s own emotions and the emotions of others, which is crucial for effective safeguarding practices.

Emotional Intelligence helps safeguarding professionals to connect with individuals, empathize with their needs, and provide positive outcomes in their roles. It is essential for safeguarding work as it enhances the ability to connect, empathize, and effect positive outcomes in safeguarding practice.

The dictionary definition of resilience is the capacity to withstand or to recover quickly from difficulties, but we do not develop or use resilience in isolation and people react differently in different situations and at different times in their day or life.
